Steam Gift Cards Discontinued at Retail
Valve is discontinuing physical Steam gift cards at retail stores, driven by persistent fraud and money-laundering schemes that exploit the redeemable codes. The company will remove the cards once current stock is sold—expected by the end of the year—while continuing to offer digital gift cards, which it considers less vulnerable to abuse.
Steam has implemented a series of anti-fraud measures in recent years, including prominent scam warnings, restricting redemptions to the user’s Steam wallet currency, limiting card availability, and temporarily pulling cards from sale when abnormal activity is detected. Despite these steps, scammers have adapted. “They continue to have an impact on Steam customers and other unsuspecting individuals,” the company stated, leading to the decision to end the retail program entirely.
Industry Perspectives on Physical Cards
Jordan Hirschfield, Director of Prepaid at Javelin Strategy & Research, argues that abandoning physical cards may be premature. “Many of the scams Steam is referring to rely on unsuspecting consumers to purchase legitimate and safe gift cards, regardless of if they are digital or physical, and send them to the bad actor,” he said. When developed with high-quality program management, card production, and design, physical cards can incorporate robust safeguards. Hirschfield added that proactive precautions in the supply chain can thwart most tampering while maintaining a successful sales channel.
